n higher education today, dropout rates are high and many students do not obtain credentials that the labor market values (The Brookings Institution). There are many factors that can attribute to this, and one is the stark reality that universities are not meant for every person. Some individuals have inherent, and possibly undiscovered, talents that are ideal for positions requiring only vocational training, or those requiring less than a four-year degree. These are referred to as America’s “Forgotten Middle”. Middle-skill jobs, which require education beyond high school but not a four-year degree, make up the largest part of America’s labor market.

Key industries in the United States are unable to find enough sufficiently trained workers to fill these jobs (National Skills Coalition). Fifty-four percent of all jobs in 2012 were middle-skill. Between 2012-2022, 49 percent of job openings will be middle-skill. Middle-skill jobs account for 54 percent of United States’ labor market, but only 44 percent of the country’s workers are trained to the middle-skill level. Explore opportunities for an accelerated path to securing your future with STEM education. Careers in manufacturing, distribution, IT, and healthcare are a sure bet…..and you’ll be driving a Porsche before many of your peers!
